October News

English Language Arts
Children are learning strategies to help them better comprehend what they are reading. Some of these strategies include Back Up and Reread, Reread Familiar Text, Checking for Understanding, and Read Books Using Pictures and Words. Students have also practiced finding “Just Right Books” by using the 5 Finger Rule. Your first grader can decide if a book is a good fit by reading a page in the book. If they miss a word or two on a page it is a “Just Right Book.”  If they miss more words, they should save the book for later. Use this strategy with your child at home and at the library when looking for a good book for them to read independently. Continue to read with your child at home and fill out the reading logs. Reading Logs are due the first day of the week.

We are also busy writing away during Writer’s Workshop. Everyone is writing “small moment” narrative stories. Students are expected to think of something they like to do or something that has happened to them and write about it in a sequential order. It is so fun reading all of their work and learning more about their life experiences. They are learning prewriting skills and are experimenting with adding details and learning how to use developmental spelling. It is exciting to see their comfort level in writing increase and the writing risks they are beginning to take.

Math
Students just completed their first unit on numbers and operations in base 10 and graphing. They worked with writing numbers in different ways, skip counting, tallying, creating data tables with tallies, comparing more/less, and explaining his/her thinking about everything they do in math. The first test will be coming home today with a rubric attached. The rubric is aligned to the report card. Each concept is assessed as “minimal understanding,” “learning,” or “mastered.” The goal is to be mastered by the end of the year. So, if your child has not mastered a concept yet, he/she will continue to work on the skill until it is mastered. We are continuing to work with counting, graphing, and explaining our thinking in the second unit by diving deeper into numbers and operations in base 10 and graphing.

Inquiry
Students are continuing to learn about sound in our second unit. The first unit identified that sound is caused by vibrations. Our second unit is diving into pitch and volume. Our first investigation test will be coming home today, as well. Again, the rubric is set up like the math rubric and is aligned to the report card. We will continue to work on concepts that are not mastered throughout the unit.

In social studies, we have worked on the Habits of Mind. We practice Listening With Understanding and Empathy, Managing Impulsivity, Persisting, Working Interdependently, and Creating, Imagining, and Innovating daily. We have also began studying different holidays and will continue to do so as the year goes on.
