Reading:

District 112 Curriculum:
  • Thematic Concept 1: Relationships between people (people are connected though relationships, what kinds of relationships are there, how/when do they change)
  • Thematic Concept 2: Relationships influence character (what is character, how can we "detect" character, understanding character traits and how they influence other people, decisions and situations)
  • Thematic Concept 3: Sequence is a kind of relationship (how do things happen, does sequence matter, look for order in cycles and patterns)
  • Thematic Concept 4: Problem-situation is a kind of relationship (problems can change relationships, how problems are solved, not all problems have solutions)

CAFE Reading Strategies:
  • Comprehension: check for understanding, using prior knowledge to connect with text, infer and support with evidence, monitor and fix up, go back and re-read, use text features, recognize literary elements, compare and contrast within and between texts
  • Accuracy: look carefully at words and letters, do the pictures and/or words look right? do they sound right, do they make sense?, use beginning and ending sounds, blend sounds, chunk letter sounds together, recognize high frequency words
  • Fluency: read often, reread text, read good fit books, use punctuation to enhance reading
  • Expanded Vocabulary: tune into interesting words, use pictures, diagrams, illustrations

  • Writer's Workshop to learn opinion, narrative and expository/informational writing
  • Words Their Way to help explore and practice word patterns, phonics skills and vocabulary
  • Handwriting Without Tears to practice correct letter formation and placement
